24 - Still...

"As he pondered this situation, Juan sobbed and said, “I almost ended it all yesterday.”  This statement seemed to bring everything to a still silence"

Selena stood, outed her cigarette and said, “Well, when you find him, you make sure to tell him that I said this:  “Stay away from me, MY kids, and my place of business.” 
Carlos said, “I will, and I’m sorry.” 

Selena responded, “It’s okay, you didn’t know. But…” as she long paused, “…now you do.”  And with that, she began to walk back to the restaurant.

Carlos sat motionless for a while.  He soon gathered himself and began walking back to the bus stop.  As he was on his way, he heard a voice behind him say, “Please tell me she’s okay.”

The question startled him.  He turned quickly and there was Juan.  Carlos immediately hurried him out of even the vaguest view of the restaurant.  When they were far removed, he told him, “she doesn’t want to see you ever again.”  

These words brought tears to Juan’s eyes.  Carlos consoled him and gave him his chicken parm.  However, the pain of her anger was greater than his hunger.  Carlos sat beside this mourning man and thought, “What have I gotten myself into?”

As he pondered this situation, Juan sobbed and said, “I almost ended it all yesterday.”  This statement seemed to bring everything to a still silence.

​Juan gathered himself and said, “I know that sounds weak, but I did.  I walked all the way to the east bridge.  And as I went, all I could think of was how before I met you, I thought that my life couldn’t get any worse.  I’ve lost everything and everyone, I’m treated like a leper, and I’ve disgraced my family.  But, all of…”
