Awake.  Lying in bed, but very much awake.  She had been awake since 4:45am. She knew the time very well.  It seemed as if every time she looked at her phone or a random clock, it was always 4:45.  Two very traumatic events happened in her life at 4:45.
Four months ago, she received a call at 4:45am to let her know that her grandmother was taken off of life support and had passed a few minutes earlier.  Three days ago, she was called into her manager’s office at 4:45pm.  She was told that the investigation came back against her favor.  After this, she was ordered to pack her things and leave the premises immediately.

She had been lying there in a roller coaster of thoughts, tears, prayer, and panic.  When she awoke at 4:45, the room was filled with darkness.  Only the charge light from her laptop and the screen of her cell phone illuminated the space.  However, time passed.  It’s now 7:30am, the sun had slowly taken over, and she hears the first of many footsteps.

There’s a knock on the door.

“Alright, Tasha.  If you can party all night with ya’ friends, you can come to church and serve The Lord.  Get up now.”
There was a pause.  “Tasha Marie Cobb, do you hear me?”

“Yes, ma’am,” she replied.

“Alright, then.  Comin’ in here after midnight and gon’ act like you…” the voice faded as she walked away and toward the kitchen.

Tasha sat up.  She put on her glasses, looked at a picture of her grandmother and said, “I know.  I’m trying.  Promise.”
She grabbed her hygiene bag and walked to the bathroom.  She turned the knob and it was locked.
